Prelude:

Gathering Words:

In the beginning, God created humankind in God’s own image, and made covenant with us. God set a rainbow in the sky as a sign of that Covenant. God promised Abraham and Sarah that they would be the ancestors of many nations, an enduring covenant that would pass on to all the generations that followed. Paul claimed for all Christians that inheritance as coming to us by faith. As we worship together today, may we reflect upon and renew this covenant, remembering the one that called us to follow him and become disciples of Jesus Christ.

Deep in the Shadows of the Past (The words below are slightly different in a few places than #2246 in our TFWS hymnal)

Deep in the shadows of the past,
Far out from settled lands,
Some nomads travelled with their God
Across the desert sands.
The dawn of hope for humankind
Was glimpsed by them alone—
A promise calling them ahead,
A future yet unknown.

While others bowed to changeless gods,
They met a mystery:
God with an uncompleted name,
‘I am what I will be’;
And by their tents, around their fires,
In story, song and law,
They praised, remembered, handed on
A past that promised more.

From Abraham to Nazareth
The promise changed and grew,
While some, remembering the past,
Recorded what they knew.
And some, in letters or laments,
In prophecy and praise,
Recovered, held, and re-expressed
New hope for changing days.

For all the writings that survived,
For leaders, long ago,
Who sifted, chose, and then preserved
The Bible that we know,
Give thanks, and find its promise yet
Our comfort, strength, and call,
The working model for our faith,
Alive with hope for all.

Prelude:

Gathering Words: from Isaiah 40

Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God…
The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades;
but the word of our God will stand forever…
He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms,
and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

For God alone my soul waits in silence,

Prelude:

Gathering Words: (Genesis 1: 1-5, NRSV, Anglicized)

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Prelude:

Gathering Words: (Psalm 126:1-4)

When the Lord changed our circumstances for the better, it was like we had been dreaming. Our mouths were suddenly filled with laughter; our tongues were filled with joyful shouts. It was even said, at that time, among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them!” Yes, the Lord has done great things for us, and we are overjoyed. Lord, change our circumstances for the better, like dry streams in the desert waste.

Prelude:  – Chris

Advent Candle Lighting:

Light one candle for love.
Because the world is broken, and the wait is long,
but love never ends.
Love faithfully goes about the work of
casting out fear
speaking truth
healing the deepest wounds
crossing the divide from this world to the next and back again.
“Here I am,” she whispers,
“the servant of the Lord.”
So we light one candle, because it only takes one:
Christ with us.

Light one candle for joy.

Because the world is broken, and the wait is long, but our joy cannot be contained.

“My soul magnifies the Lord,” she whispers, “and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” So we light one candle, because it only takes one:

Christ with us.

Gathering Words: We gather on Holy Ground. This planet is our refuge, our home, our life, our hope. God has done many wondrous things, but it starts with creation. This time together in worship is also holy ground, a sacred moment, when God is present with us. We lift our prayers to God. We lift our praise to God. In difficult times, Martin Rinkart wrote a hymn of Thanksgiving. Now Thank We All Our God. Let us sing together, remembering all the great things God has done for us, including the gift of his son.

Take this Sabbath morning to slow down, calm your spirits, rest your bodies. Listen to the voice of the creator who desires the best for you. AMEN.
